The April 8th total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. Long Island will experience a partial eclipse. Only a part of the Sun will appear to be covered, giving it a crescent shape. On the North Fork, the eclipse will begin at 2:12 PM and end at 4::37 PM. Maximum eclipse occurs at 3:27 PM.
Call Hallock State Park Preserve to reserve a pair of solar glasses: 631-315-5475, to be picked up at Hallock SP on Monday, April 8th, during the informational program that runs 2:00-4:30 PM. There will be a telescope with a solar lens in both the upper parking lot and the lower lot at the visitor center. Check into the Visitor Center for your reserved glasses. This is a FREE event, there is no fee for the solar glasses and no parking fee.
Orient Beach State Park will also have glasses available on a first come, first serve basis at the entrance booth (631) 323-2440. (The park is currently CLOSED due to severe erosion of the road from the 4/4 Nor'easter.)
